Illuminate Book Path

Book services built on principles, not promises.

The Manifesto: What We Stand For

We believe the publishing industry has lost its way. Too many services chase volume over value, speed over substance, and metrics over meaning. Illuminate Book Path exists because authors deserve better. Every engagement we accept is governed by these six principles — non-negotiable, tested across hundreds of manuscripts, and proven by the authors who trusted us enough to hold them to account.

Declan M., debut novelist, 2024: "They turned down my first enquiry because they didn't think I was ready. When I came back six months later, the work we did together was transformative. That honesty at the start told me everything."
Principle What It Means in Practice What We Refuse to Do
I. Manuscript Sovereignty Your voice, your vision. Our role is structural and strategic — never substitutional. We shape, never replace. We will not ghostwrite passages and call it editing. We will not flatten your style into market templates.
II. Honest Assessment We tell you what the manuscript needs, even when it means more work or a delayed timeline. We will not validate weak structure to keep a client happy. We will not rush developmental notes to meet arbitrary deadlines.
III. Selective Engagement We take on projects where we can genuinely add value. If your manuscript needs something we don't offer, we'll say so. We will not accept every project that comes through the door. We will not pretend expertise in genres we don't serve well.
IV. Transparent Process You will always know where your project stands, what's next, and why. No black boxes. We will not hide behind vague timelines or opaque editorial processes.
V. Fair Pricing Our fees reflect the actual work involved. We scope carefully and price honestly. We will not use bait pricing, hidden fees, or inflate word-count estimates.
VI. Long-Term Authorship We build capabilities in the author, not dependency on us. Each engagement should make you a stronger writer. We will not create recurring dependency through incomplete handoffs or withheld knowledge.

These principles were formalised in 2021 after three years of refining our approach. They are reviewed annually with input from past clients.

Three Author Pathways

The First Draft Pathway

For authors with a completed first draft who need structural assessment, developmental direction, and a clear revision roadmap. This is not line editing — it's architectural work on narrative, argument, or exposition.

Typical engagement: 6–10 weeks. Begins with a diagnostic read.

The Revision Pathway

For manuscripts past the first revision that need deep editorial partnership. We work chapter-by-chapter with tracked commentary, structural suggestions, and line-level refinement where the text demands it.

Typical engagement: 8–14 weeks. Requires a completed second draft minimum.

Aoife K., literary fiction: "The revision pathway forced me to confront structural weaknesses I'd been avoiding for two years. Uncomfortable and necessary."

The Publication Pathway

For polished manuscripts approaching submission or self-publication. We provide query letter strategy, synopsis development, submission package review, or self-publishing production guidance — depending on your route.

Typical engagement: 3–6 weeks. Manuscript must be at final-draft stage.

Capability Framework

Rather than listing services as interchangeable products, we map our capabilities to the stages of a manuscript's life. Not every manuscript needs every capability. Part of our initial assessment is determining which capabilities apply to your project — and which don't.

Capability Applies To
Structural Diagnosis First Draft, Revision
Developmental Commentary First Draft, Revision
Line Editing Revision
Copy Editing Revision, Publication
Query & Synopsis Strategy Publication
Self-Publishing Guidance Publication
Author Voice Development All Pathways
Tomás R., non-fiction author: "I expected to need everything on the list. They scoped me down to three capabilities and saved me weeks and hundreds of euros."

An Editorial Note on Honesty

We lose prospective clients regularly because we tell them what they don't want to hear. A manuscript that isn't ready for line editing shouldn't receive it. A query letter built on a structurally unsound book will fail regardless of how polished the letter is. We would rather lose the engagement than deliver work that doesn't serve the author's long-term interests.

This is not a marketing position. It is an operational reality that shapes every scoping conversation, every timeline, and every fee we quote.

Is This the Right Fit? A Decision Board

Before you reach out, consider whether our approach aligns with what you need. We've found that clarity at this stage saves everyone time.

We Are a Good Fit If:

  • You have a completed draft (not an idea or outline)
  • You want honest, sometimes uncomfortable feedback
  • You're willing to revise based on structural guidance
  • You understand that quality editorial work takes weeks, not days
  • You value your own voice and want to strengthen it, not replace it

We Are Not a Good Fit If:

  • You need ghostwriting or co-authoring services
  • You want a quick proofread with no structural input
  • You're looking for the lowest price above all else
  • You need a guaranteed turnaround under two weeks
  • You want validation rather than genuine editorial partnership
Niamh F., memoir writer: "The fit check page alone told me more about their values than three other editors' entire websites. I knew before I even emailed that this was the right team."
